Coconut Coir

What Is Coconut Coir?

Coconut coir is a by-product of the coconut industry and made from the husks fibers of the coconut after the white meat and shells have been removed. The husk is the fringed outer layer of the coconut and is removed washed and dried before getting compressed into small bricks or bales. Once the coconut husk fibers have gone through the cleaning and drying process it is officially considered coconut coir. Coconut comes in loose or compressed form, the most common being compressed. Compressed coconut coir will expand in volume up to 5 times or more simply by adding the appropriate amount water. For example, our 5kg bales of Coconut Coir expand enough to fill an entire wheel barrow full of ready-to-use coconut coir.

Full disclosure, we make all of our own substrates and manage or employ the entire process in our facility from start to finish except when it comes to Coconut Coir. We do not make the Coconut Coir sold on our website but we have decided to promote the products from the company we have trusted and used for many years. Our partners have over 35 years of experience in the coconut coir industry and a supply chain that starts at their family coconut farm in Sri Lanka. In North America, Coconut Coir can be somewhat hard to come by since it originates on farms that are half way around the world. Coconut farms are found only in specific tropical parts of the world such as Indonesia, Philippines, India, and Sri Lanka which are also the leading coconut producing countries.

Now that we have laid out some of the background for our Coconut Coir let’s unpack why you should be using it as a substrate for mushroom cultivation. For starters coconut coir makes such a great substrate that it’s always used without any added supplement or organic biomass. Coconut coir does a great job of retaining moisture while allowing for optimal air flow through the tiny air pockets between the fibers. Coconut Coir is the ideal substrate for beginners based on fact that it is the easiest to use and provides a lot of the necessary conditions needed for a successful harvest. Though Coconut Coir is not the number one preferred substrate for mushrooms (wood is number one) but it is the number one preferred substrate for beginner growers willing to sacrifice a small portion of mushroom volume for a guaranteed harvest. Coconut Coir is a top notch substrate that performs insanely well when used for mushroom cultivation capable of producing jumbo sized mushrooms.
