Organic Rye Berries

 100% Certified Organic

To grow the most impressive mushrooms possible we start the cultivation cycle with grain spawn made from certified organic rye berries. Sterilized organic rye berries produce the absolute best mycelium which will help to create a mushroom block that is much stronger and healthier. The type of substrate that is used to make mushroom blocks varies depending on the mushroom species. But without fully colonized grain spawn the entire process comes to a sudden stop.

The most important part for producing mycelium is the set up. There are many ways to produce grain spawn using various types of equipment but there is one common denominator: sterilization. To avoid any issues make sure all mycology work is completed in a sterilized environment with sterilized equipment. Extra precaution should be used to help eliminate the possibility of contamination.

One of the most effective ways to eliminate competing organisms from causing contamination is to sterilize using a large pressure cooker or autoclave. Working in front of a laminar flow hood is another very important piece to consistently produce huge clusters of successful mushroom. Of the time it takes from grain spawn to harvest, 70% of that time consists of watching and waiting. The other 30% of that time consists of the work needed for set up.

Our organic rye berries will produce the strongest grain spawn when used with any of our liquid cultures. Grain spawn is scalable and can be produce in almost any quantity imaginable. The more grain spawn that is used the more liquid culture that will be needed for successful inoculation. As a rule of thumb, if the desired result is to inoculate 2 or 3 mushroom blocks then a large mason jar of fully colonized grain will do the trick. Using 0.2 micron filter bags to produce grain spawn is more efficient when making large batches of 10 or more mushroom blocks.

The production of mycelium during the grain spawn stage requires much less attention than fruiting stage. The fruiting stage is the last stage before harvesting the mushrooms. To produce the best results during the fruiting stage it is important to create the proper environment for the mushrooms to flourish. Elements such as heat, lighting, ventilation, and humidity will all have an impact on the end results. Having all these elements dialed in to suit the species of mushrooms to be grown will help to produce consistently successful results.

Shroom Guy

Thank you for taking the time to help me dial in my mushroom set up. The cultivation tips and Master’s Mix were the missing pieces.
