Blue Oyster Mushrooms

Easy To Grow

Blue oyster mushrooms are easy to grow, taste great, and produce high yields making it one of the most popular of the oyster mushroom species. Blue oysters will flourish in a clean environment with cool temperatures and high humidity. These mushrooms are not extremely picky and do not require absolutely perfect conditions to grow. The temperature and humidity should be adjusted according to the climate and conditions where the mushrooms will be grown. These mushrooms can be grown in just about anything from buckets to containers. However, the best method to grow huge mushrooms is to use filter bags designed for mushroom cultivation. Want to grow enormous mushrooms? We recommend using rye berries for grain spawn and maple & soy hulls mix for your substrate.

Sure To Impress

Blue oysters are a high yielding mushroom that produces bulging stems with gills that span the mushroom from bottom to top. As with most oyster mushroom species, blue oysters have a thick flat cap that can display colors that are sure to impress. Most blue oyster strains produce a blue-grey color and that will continue to fade throughout the growth cycle. In the kitchen, the mushrooms instantly lose all majestic beauty once chopped up and cooked in a pan. In a pan add a dash of oil, some onions, and garlic along with your mushrooms. As a side dish or the main dish, blue oyster mushrooms are incredibly healthy and delicious.

Growth Timeline

Blue oyster mushrooms are an easy mushroom to grow and great for beginner cultivators. Blue oyster mycelium is normally quite aggressive and will start to colonize the grain within a few days. Once the grain is fully colonized the blue oyster mycelium is ready to be transferred to substrate. This is the stage where the mycelium will take the nutrients from the substrate to produce mushrooms. The next and final stage is the fruiting stage. The first (and largest) flush of mushrooms will be ready for harvest in as little as seven to ten days. To get to the fruiting stage will take approximately four weeks from the time the grain is inoculated with liquid culture.

What To Expect

It is quite interesting to watch blue oyster mushrooms while it doubles in size every day until harvest. Three consecutive harvests (flushes) can be expected when cultivating blue oyster mushrooms. Each proceeding flush will be significantly smaller until the substrate has been exhausted of all nutrients and minerals. After your mushrooms have grown, the used substrate is great for gardens and the bags are recyclable. The carbon footprint of mushroom cultivation is near zero and cleaner than most methods of modern food production.
